Aurelion's Daily Tech Update

Sunday put AI to work building AI. The factory robot would like the next shift.

Recursive’s downloadable Flint coding model supplies an artifact from human-supervised, automated AI research. Mitsubishi Electric prepares a humanoid-and-CNC demonstration for October 26. CrowdStrike reports four real-world intrusion campaigns using AI agents. Meanwhile, oxygen collisions at RHIC provide strong evidence for a fleeting sample of the early universe’s quark–gluon plasma.

Projected capabilityObserved capability

Today's move: Projected capability holds at 117.6; observed capability rises from 115.4 to 115.5. HGI narrows from +2.2 to +2.1.

Saturday held the curves while distinguishing containment tests, developer benchmarks and new institutional commitments. Sunday’s increment credits a delivered artifact: Flint’s weights are available for outside examination. Recursive attributes contributions to its automated research system, Eureka Machine, while a human team chose and supervised the project. The model’s availability is directly inspectable; the extent of the automated system’s contribution and its comparative advantages remain company claims to test.

That distinction keeps a modest increment separate from declaring an intelligence explosion. A useful research tool or local coding model can count as observed progress without establishing general superhuman intelligence. Mitsubishi’s announced robot collaboration is also worth watching, but its scheduled October 26 exhibition has not happened yet. We give that demonstration no additional numerical credit today. Neither announcement supplies a sufficient basis for changing projected capability.

Projected remains 117.6. Observed rises to 115.5. HGI narrows to +2.1. The 0.1 movement is an editorial judgment about delivered, accessible work, not a measured amount of intelligence. We have not independently reproduced Recursive’s benchmarks or research process. Historical readings remain frozen. The next useful evidence is how the model and development method perform under outside scrutiny, rather than how quickly a description of automated research becomes a forecast of unlimited acceleration.

2 · Today's Digital Landscape

The research assistant built a model, the robot wants the machine shift, and the attackers hired agents of their own.

Automated research → physical AI → operational cyber risk.

The AI helped build another AI. Recursive has supplied a first set of receipts.

Recursive’s Flint is a mixture-of-experts coding model with 40 billion total parameters and about 2.5 billion active per token. Its weights are available under Apache 2.0. The company says a small team of people and agents built it from scratch in under four months, with Eureka Machine proposing, implementing and testing ideas across architecture, training, quantization and execution. The delivered model is real; the claimed division of research labor remains attributed to its developer.

One reported contribution is a low-precision version that finishes within 0.7 benchmark points of the 16-bit model on the company’s evaluation mix. Recursive also reports fast local inference with an optimized engine under specified hardware and context conditions. Neither comparison establishes universal performance on ordinary laptops. Activating 2.5 billion parameters per token also does not make the full 40-billion-parameter collection disappear from storage. Model size, memory, context length and inference software still shape the practical experience.

The important distinction is between automating research work and demonstrating an indefinitely accelerating, independent improvement cycle. Humans supplied objectives, infrastructure and release decisions. Outside researchers can now investigate the artifact, while reproducing the method’s contribution is a separate task. Our interest is whether automated experimentation consistently produces useful, verifiable improvements and how much human judgment it requires. The AI has not fired the research team. It has been promoted to the lab, where its first assignment was helping build a smaller colleague.

The machine shop has a new apprentice. Tomorrow, it is scheduled to meet the CNC.

Mitsubishi Electric’s October 21 announcement describes a system connecting a humanoid robot, a computer numerical control machine tool and a natural-language AI machining task planner. The company plans to exhibit it at JIMTOF 2026 in Tokyo, opening October 26. Proposed work includes setup, cleaning, removal and transport of finished parts, inspection and troubleshooting. As of this Sunday, the public demonstration is scheduled for tomorrow; this issue does not treat it as already completed.

The target is the variable work surrounding a precise machining process. A CNC can execute a toolpath without automatically handling every fixture, workpiece or cleanup task. Mitsubishi’s proposition is that coordinated, general-purpose robotics can reduce the integration work and production-line changes required for conventional automation. Its industry-first description is based on its own research. The announcement does not independently establish cycle-time improvements, long-term reliability or the economics of an unattended commercial shop.

Our view is that the division of labor matters more than the novelty of a robot standing beside a machine. Motion control, correct setup and physical safeguards remain essential even when the instruction arrives in ordinary language. Useful evidence would include repeatable handling, recovery from mistakes and safe interaction with people under realistic conditions. A convincing exhibition can begin that assessment, while sustained factory results must carry it further. The CNC already knows how to make the part. The apprentice still needs to load the blank without dropping it on the floor.

Four hacking crews brought AI agents to work. This report goes beyond a scary prompt.

CrowdStrike’s October 21 investigation describes four previously unreported threat actors whose exposed agent frameworks and records revealed intrusion activity documented between May and August. The company reports actual compromises, including at least 15 healthcare entities in Argentina, government systems and corporate data theft. One reported workflow divided tasks between a Supervisor and an Executor. These are a security vendor’s findings about executed campaigns, with attribution and evidentiary limits preserved.

The accompanying overview says that in one case an agent moved laterally and collected domain-controller credentials in approximately twenty minutes without further human guidance. That describes a particular stage and case, rather than the duration of every intrusion. The operators also differed in skill and supervision; one repeatedly intervened when the model encountered barriers. The humans chose targets and supplied objectives. Flexible execution by an agent does not establish that the model independently decided to become a criminal.

This is stronger operational evidence than Thursday’s captured-but-unexecuted malicious design. It reinforces the need to limit what compromised credentials and tool access can authorize, and to detect actions while a response is still possible. The firm’s forecasts of wider adoption remain forecasts; the reported victims already deserve attention without them. Our concern is the potential compression of the defensive response window when familiar techniques become more automated. The hacker still chooses the victim. The agent is willing to work through lunch, dinner and the incident-response meeting.

9.9 / 10 — “The attackers have automated the overtime.”

No change today

CrowdStrike adds concrete cases to an already serious category: human-directed use of AI in real-world intrusions. That deserves more weight in the discussion than a hypothetical attack sequence alone. It does not automatically require another numerical increment after recent issues already recognized operational cybercrime and failures of control. A reported twenty-minute stage illustrates urgency, without establishing that every campaign now operates at that speed or that defensive response has become impossible.

Flint introduces an important development path, but its supervised construction does not demonstrate an uncontrolled improvement loop. Mitsubishi’s coming exhibition likewise does not establish either sustained safe factory performance or a new physical safety failure. We should evaluate each system according to observed behavior, enforceable boundaries and outcomes. The seriousness of a possible application is a reason to investigate carefully, rather than assign the same risk meaning to a research process, a planned demonstration and a reported intrusion.

LAM holds at 9.9. The hold follows today’s evidence in relation to risks already credited, rather than reserving the maximum for a fictional threshold. A distinct, well-supported change could justify reassessment in either direction. This is a semi-serious editorial index, not a probability of catastrophe. The practical lesson is that defenders cannot assume the person directing an intrusion must remain at the keyboard, or that the work pauses when that person needs sleep.

4 · Wildcard · Reality Check

Physicists smashed oxygen into oxygen and found a little of the universe’s first soup.

Jet-quenching evidence probes a small collision system at lower energy.

The earliest universe has supplied another peer-reviewed recipe.

The STAR Collaboration’s October 20 Physical Review Letters result examines oxygen–oxygen collisions at RHIC at 200 GeV per nucleon pair. It reports roughly 20% suppression of selected associated particle and jet yields in high-activity events compared with low-activity events. This energy-loss signature, called jet quenching, supplies strong evidence for quark–gluon plasma in a small nuclear system. The percentage describes the relative suppression of those selected yields; it does not mean that every jet loses exactly 20% of its energy.

Quark–gluon plasma resembles the extremely hot matter of the early universe, before quarks and gluons were confined into familiar protons and neutrons. Energetic particles crossing the collision’s medium can redistribute energy, allowing researchers to infer its properties from what escapes. Brookhaven notes that oxygen-collision quenching had already been observed at CERN’s LHC. STAR’s contribution tests a lower-energy regime, helping investigate how small and under what conditions a system can still produce the characteristic medium.

The result does not recreate the Big Bang or provide a stable container of primordial matter. The relevant conditions exist briefly in a microscopic collision region, and identifying their properties requires statistical comparisons and theoretical interpretation. That makes the experiment a sharper probe of the boundary between different behaviors of matter. Reality Check: the soup is inferred from what happened to the particles passing through it. The collision was brief; preparing a defensible recipe took rather more paperwork.
