Inspectable artifacts deserve attention, with independent interpretation still essential.

Projected capabilityObserved capability

Today's move: Projected capability holds at 117.6; observed capability holds at 115.7. HGI remains +1.9.

Thursday credited a new independently evaluated model. Friday’s public mathematics is potentially a larger scientific development, but the evidence asks for a different kind of review. OpenAI and Anthropic have separately released arguments and formal artifacts claiming to refute the Exponential Time Hypothesis. That is substantial research material to inspect. Two laboratories publishing claims do not, by themselves, provide independent confirmation of either result’s complete mathematical meaning.

Lean can check a precisely encoded theorem under its logical foundations. Experts still need to examine whether that theorem corresponds to the intended statement, definitions and computational assumptions. Anthropic’s repository explicitly separates those tasks and warns that its result says nothing about solving practical formulas efficiently. OpenAI designated an external group to examine and explain its claim. We are not presenting either publication as a settled verdict or claiming that we reproduced the formal builds.

Projected remains 117.6. Observed remains 115.7. HGI holds at +1.9. The released artifacts warrant serious attention, with independent mathematical assessment and practical characterization still important. A major confirmed result could justify revisiting observed capability. The Binance breach and PHP2Shell exploitation are consequential security failures, but the cited evidence does not establish that AI caused them or that they measure improved general intelligence. HGI is an editorial heuristic, not a calibrated intelligence measurement. Historical points stay frozen. The proof is public; the verdict still needs the mathematicians.

2 · Today's Digital Landscape

The vault, the firewall and the mathematical shortcut.

Developing financial breach → confirmed exploitation → claims under examination.

Binance is investigating a $6.3 billion incident. About $3 billion is frozen.

Binance’s October 30 statement estimates roughly $6.3 billion in affected assets, with approximately $3 billion frozen through partners. Its preliminary account points to a possibly compromised DevOps laptop and access to a service container that submitted unauthorized withdrawals. Later reporting describes additional possible entry points. The initial route is not a completed forensic explanation, and frozen assets are not automatically returned assets. The totals describe estimated impact and containment at a particular stage, rather than a final unrecoverable loss.

The latest Friday update says deposits are operating normally while withdrawals remain paused. Binance has promised to cover losses using its protection reserve and company funds; that is a commitment, not confirmation that every loss has already been reimbursed. TRM Labs separately traces approximately $6.36 billion across ten blockchains, most moved in around twenty minutes, and attributes the operation to North Korea’s TraderTraitor with high confidence. That remains the analytics firm’s attribution; Binance has not named a confirmed perpetrator in the reporting cited here.

Binance says it has found no evidence of wallet private-key leakage. That narrower statement does not establish that signing authority or the surrounding operational workflow was protected. The investigation needs to explain how unauthorized instructions became valid transfers and which independent controls failed. The incident illustrates the concentration of trust inside a large exchange even when the underlying ledger remains visible. The blockchain kept its record. The security team now has to establish who obtained authority to write the withdrawal instructions, and the recovery team has to turn freezes and promises into actual restitution.

The firewall was keeping watch. Its management page needed a lock of its own.

Palo Alto Networks’ October 29 update confirms active PHP2Shell exploitation against internet-exposed PAN-OS management interfaces. Unit 42 says it independently verified attacker tooling that chains the PHP weaknesses with a Linux privilege-escalation flaw to reach root. The two PHP issues, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, were disclosed and patched upstream on October 21. The new development is confirmed exploitation of a protective platform, rather than a vulnerability discovered this morning. A service-level foothold and system-level control are different stages of the chain.

The populations also need separating. The vendor says approximately 0.02% of its global installed base had internet-facing management interfaces configured and were impacted, with those customers contacted. Its separate estimate of more than 22.6 million exposed instances potentially vulnerable to the PHP flaws describes a broader population, not millions of confirmed firewall intrusions. The advisory concerns the management web interface, including its HTTPS UI and XML API; GlobalProtect portal and gateway are outside this specific advisory. Those limits matter without making the confirmed attacks insignificant.

The vendor directs customers to remove public management access, restrict it to trusted sources and apply the appropriate branch-specific hotfixes. Internet exposure creates the greatest risk; keeping an interface internal reduces exposure while leaving patching necessary. Organizations also need to assess whether a device was already compromised. Protective infrastructure has powerful permissions of its own, so its administrative surface deserves the same care as the systems behind it. The firewall still has an important job. Its own front door cannot be exempt from the rules it enforces for everybody else.

Two AI labs challenged a cornerstone of computing theory. The mathematicians want to inspect the map.

OpenAI’s October 26 release and Anthropic’s separate public repository claim algorithms contradicting the Exponential Time Hypothesis, or ETH. Roughly, ETH says that solving general 3-SAT formulas requires exponentially growing worst-case time as the number of variables increases. Think of many true-or-false switches constrained by clauses involving up to three literals. The question is whether any setting satisfies every clause. The labs claim subexponential algorithms, including methods for counting satisfying assignments, rather than simply a faster answer on a familiar benchmark.

If the claims withstand review, that would change an important assumption used throughout complexity theory. It would not establish P = NP or show that ordinary computers can efficiently solve every difficult real-world instance. Subexponential growth can still be enormous, and an asymptotic advantage may be practically inaccessible. Anthropic explicitly states that its result provides no practical solving claim. The two releases are also separate research artifacts, not one laboratory independently reproducing and certifying the other’s theorem.

Both publish Lean material alongside mathematical papers. Formal checking strengthens scrutiny of encoded statements, while the relationship between the formal statement and the intended theorem still needs expert attention. OpenAI named an external group led by Russell Impagliazzo, Ramamohan Paturi and Ryan Williams; participation should not be mistaken for completed endorsement. We have inspected the release descriptions and available artifact structure, not independently rebuilt or proved these results. The AI may have found a remarkable shortcut. Publishing the map gives mathematicians something concrete to test before everybody starts planning a journey along it.

3 · Looming Apocalypse Meter

9.9 / 10 — “The vault took a hit. The firewall had to patch its own front door.”

9.9 out of 10

No change today

Binance’s estimated impact is severe, and confirmed attacks on firewall management systems deserve attention independently of whether AI was involved. A technological-risk index should not dismiss financial or protective-infrastructure failures merely because no autonomous model has been identified as the cause. The outstanding questions are the extent of lasting loss, the effectiveness of recovery and the breadth of compromise. Those questions remain different from assigning every affected dollar a fresh increment of systemic danger.

PHP2Shell was already part of the emergency reflected in recent readings. The PAN-OS confirmation adds concrete operational evidence within that concern, with a specific exposed configuration, vendor outreach and available fixes. This is a serious failure of protection, while the evidence does not establish universal compromise or a new system-wide collapse. The mathematical claims require their own verification; even a correct asymptotic result would not automatically establish practical cryptographic compromise or dangerous autonomous behavior.

LAM holds at 9.9. The hold reflects today’s evidence against risks already recognized, rather than a rule reserving 10 for an invented civilization-scale threshold. The large breach remains under investigation, and the confirmed firewall campaign has a defined scope and remediation path. Stronger evidence of broader disruption could justify reassessment, as could sustained evidence of effective containment. This is a semi-serious editorial indicator, not a probability of extinction or financial collapse. The alarms are serious; the work is to establish what happened, contain it and verify that repairs hold.

4 · Wildcard · Reality Check

A solar cell that catches light from both sides learned how to handle the heat.

Crystal mechanics guide a promising laboratory device, with field durability still ahead.

The crystal learned to accommodate stress. The engineers still have to test the weather.

An October 29 Nature Energy paper links a perovskite crystal’s ability to accommodate stress with improved solar-cell stability. The researchers study perovskite/silicon tandems: stacked light-absorbing layers that use different portions of sunlight. Their device is also bifacial, collecting a contribution from light reflected onto its rear. The design aims for useful power from both sides while helping the material tolerate heat and illumination. A strong initial laboratory result matters more if the cell can maintain it.

Across the compositions studied, greater lattice compliance—the crystal’s elastic response to stress—reduced heat-induced microstrain and electronic disorder. Guided by that result, the team reports 36.2 milliwatts per square centimeter under 0.20 albedo-equivalent illumination, plus retention of 90% of initial efficiency after more than 1,000 hours at 65°C under one-sun testing. The power density includes the stated illumination conditions. It is not a universal 36.2% conversion-efficiency figure, and the accelerated test is not a twenty-year field-life demonstration.

The useful contribution is a testable material property that helps explain durability, rather than another recipe selected only because its first measurement looks good. Commercial devices must still face manufacturing variation, weather, humidity and repeated thermal cycling. Rear-side gains also depend on the installation and surrounding reflectivity. Reality Check: the laboratory device and stability measurement are real; commercial lifetime remains to be shown. The cell catches light from both sides. Engineers are still working on making sure it can withstand weather arriving from every direction.
